A Gold Rush of Indulgence

DSC_1251Very few things could be more decadent than eating gold. Synonymous with fortune, luxury, and elegance, the beautifully bright metal is something you don't typically see atop a chocolate truffle. However, when it came time to create chocolates for a 50th wedding anniversary, we seized the golden opportunity.

To create these dazzling truffles, we used a form of gold known as gold leaf. Gold leaf is created by hammering the metal into very fine, thin sheets. Most commonly, 22-karat yellow gold is used for gold leaf. The practice of using gold leaf for culinary purposes first began in Europe in the late 16th Century. Several liquors were made containing small pieces of gold leaf floating throughout in order to create an image of high value. Since gold leaf has no taste, it has since been used in a wide variety of culinary creations, adding an impressive aesthetic.

When it comes to celebrating, hedonists want to take their senses to the top of the pleasure mountain. And what calls for celebration more than a 50th wedding anniversary? Such a golden occasion had to be sweetened with chocolate, naturally.
